2011 - All prices
are in GBP, VAT and delivery to be added
We are pleased to be able
to offer the following good potters materials at cost effective prices:-
We stock a significant
number of raw materials, oxides etc used by potters and ceramicists. We are
happy to supply companies with raw materials for other uses and, in fact, our
parent company specializes in metal compounds and rare earths such as cerium
oxide, cobalt oxide, cobalt carbonate, copper oxide, cuprous and cupric, copper
carbonate, erbium oxide, iron chromite, lithium carbonate powder and
crystalline, manganese carbonate, manganese dioxide, neodymium oxide, nickel
oxide, praseodymium oxide, tin oxide, vanadium pentoxide etc and so we can offer
a good price for small and medium lots of these and many other materials; for larger lots we will liaise with our parent company for
you.

FOR LOTS
OF INFORMATION ON RAW MATERIALS, OXIDES ETC..see example below regarding Frits
CALCIUM
BORATE FRIT 1030-1180oC. SiO2 17.9%, B2O3 50.3%, MgO
0.1%, Al2O3 4.9%, K2O 0.3%, CaO 26.5%. Insoluble colemanite frit
for use where recipes specify greater than 5% colemanite. Can be used as a base
in lead free glazes.
FERRO FRIT 3110
Soft low alumina
sodium borosilicate frit for glazes. Often used in crystal and crackle glazes.
This frit can be very useful to reduce the feldspar content in glazes (since
many high feldspar glazes have low clay content and therefore poor slurry
suspension properties and dried hardness). The chemistry of this frit is similar
to feldspar (but with low alumina and CaO in addition to the alkali fluxes).
That means if you substitute this for at least part of the feldspar you can
increase the kaolin (to supply the alumina) and thereby improve slurry
properties. In addition you will be able to reduce the amount of troublesome
calcium carbonate. Helps in the production of copper blues and manganese purples
and raku glazes.
GERSTLEY
BORATE (Gillespie replacement) SiO2 11.8%, CaO 23%, K2O 0.01%,
Al2O3 1.7%, MgO 3.9%, Na2O 3.77%, B2O3 3.9%, SrO 0.45%. A blended high purity,
high colloid material. Consistent due to blendin and quality controlled
processing. Produces lower levels of crawling and pin hole effects than the old
Gerstley material.
LEAD BI-SILICATE FRIT
900 - 1100oC. SiO2 29%, Al2O3 12%, PbO 59%. A good clear, general purpose lead frit for developing rich,
bright surfaces and has a good reaction to colours
. The safe way to introduce lead. Particularly suitable for red clays.
LEAD SESQUISILICATE FRIT
860 - 1080oC. As above but specially coated to reduce solubility.
STANDARD BORAX FRIT
900 - 1140oC. Often used in the production of earthenware glazes when a lead-free
glaze is required. Slight milkiness, especially at low temperatures, may be
evident over red clays, and the colour response with oxides etc is not as vivid
as with lead frits.
All
prices are in GBP per kg of material (unless specifically stated) VAT to be
added.

General Guide - Uses of Metal Oxides
 | ANTIMONY TRIOXIDE (Sb2O3) - Additions 1-2% to a lead
glaze gives a yellow (often known as Naples Yellow). Very Toxic. |
 | CHROMIUM OXIDE (Cr2O3) - Usually 1-3% produces greens
but will give pink in the presence of TIN, can produce reds and yellows in a
low firing LEAD (low ALUMINA) glaze and browns in ZINC glazes. 1% in a
LEAD/SODA glaze gives a yellow. |
 | COBALT - COBALT CARBONATE - 1-3%, COBALT OXIDE up to
1.5% produces a deep blue or blue-black colour in LEAD and leadless glazes and
a vivid blue in alkaline glazes. The presence of MAGNESIUM gives a more purple
shade. The carbonate is weaker but gives less risk of speckling. |
 | COPPER– COPPER CARBONATE—3-7%, COPPER OXIDE up to
5% will give an apple green colour under neutral or oxidising conditions.
Yellow-Greens in POTASH glaze, Blue-Greens in BARIUM glaze. If used in
alkaline glazes it will give a turquoise blue colour. Fired under reduction it
creates a copper red or sang de-boeuf. The carbonate is weaker but gives less
risk of speckle. NOTE – Be careful if adding to low solubility glazes, it
causes the solubility of the LEAD to be greatly increased. Strong Flux. |
 | IRON– BLACK IRON OXIDE (Ferrous) - 4-8%, RED NATURAL
IRON OXIDE 2-10% will achieve colours from honey to dark brown. Depending upon
the firing conditions brownish reds, brown, black, yellow and purple can be
produced. Under reducing conditions a blue colour can be obtained. |
 | YELLOW IRON OXIDE (Ferric) - 3-8% gives yellow to
brown colours. Yellow ochre
is the weakest but most miscible of the iron oxides. All are good painting
pigments |
 | IRON SPANGLES - Gives blacks and browns. Will produce
speckle effects |
 | ILLMENITE — An IRON ore with significant level of
TITANIUM—most often used in granular form to produce dark specks in clay or
glaze. Fine grade to produce tans and buffs. Higher IRON concentration than in
RUTILE. |
 | MANGANESE - MANGANESE CARBONATE - 0.2-5%, MANGANESE
DIOXIDE - Creates brown colours in glazes. Pink, purple or plum colours can be
obtained in alkaline glazes. When mixed with IRON, it produces brown; when
mixed with COBALT, it produces violets, with both it can contribute towards a
black.. It is a strong oxidising agent. |
 | NICKEL OXIDE - Black- 1-3% gives dull browns , greens
and greys. In high ZINC content stoneware glazes a yellow or blue is obtained
under reducing conditions. Often used to modify colours. |
 | RUTILE - An ore containing TITANIUM DIOXIDE with lower
levels of IRON OXIDE than ILLMENITE used to produce ivory through to mottled
brown colour in oxidation, purples and blues in reduction - especially in
combination with a trace of ILLMENITE. Excellent for modifying other stains or
oxides and creating mottled / streaked effects. |
 | SILICON CARBIDE — Highly refractory, can be used to
create bubbles. In highly alkaline glazes 1% can create a copper red style
colour. |
 | TIN OXIDE (Stannic Oxide) - 4-7% will produce a semi
opaque glaze, white (blue tint) at 5-9%, 8-10% will give a full opaque. Useful
as a white decorative pigment - either alone or mixed with a transparent
glaze. |
 | TITANIUM DIOXIDE - Up to 10% will produce a creamy
white finish with a matt or semi matt surface |
 | VANADIUM PENTOXIDE - Up to 10% will give a weak
yellow, stronger in conjunction with TIN. Can be used at higher temperatures
than ANTIMONY TRIOXIDE. |
 | ZINC OXIDE — Reduces expansion, improves craze
resistance, gloss, whiteness and in low alumina glazes promotes crystal
growth. |
 | ZIRCONIUM SILICATE — Opacifier, high purity, bright
white. 4-7% wil produce a semi opaque glaze, white at 5-9%, 8-10% will give a
full opaque. Reduces crazing but can pinhole especially with high expansion
glazes |
 | SILVER CARBONATE - Primarily used in Raku firings.
Will give Yellow or Gold effects. |
 | BISMUTH SUBNITRATE - Used in Raku firings. Will
produce Mother of Pearl type effects. |
