Powder Crackle Glazes

These glaze powders have been specifically designed to crackle at the relevant temperature. To make them crackle they do need to be applied thickly to give enough depth of glaze to crack. Some people open the kiln early to encourage the cracks. They can take 48 hours to crackle.

The smokey effects come with raku but you can soak the work in tea or ink to colour the cracks and create effects. The copper blue reduction comes with a reduction firing only.

Crackle glazes should not be classed as food safe as glaze can more easily crack off.

Generally if mixing a dipping glaze with these glaze powders you need a consistency of single cream - Sieve, then start with a ratio of 1 powder to 0.8 liquid and then add more as required mixing well but without trapping air.  Sieve, then leave for two hours before using.  Due to the high proportion of alkalis in them, Raku glazes can settle and go hard so do not make more than you need at any one time.

If you are not dipping straight away and it is settling out then next time you can add our Universal General Medium UGM in the ratio Powder 100gm to 790gm liquid - the liquid being water 75/85% to 15/25% UGM;   or replace 12% of the water with a 2% SCMC cellulose glaze binder solution;   or our cheaper recommendation is to add 2% bentonite to the dry powder - see Raw Materials.  

If creating a brush on we would recommend using the UGM in the ratio 100gm powder - 40gm water - 50gm UGM medium and then add more water if needed.

By soaking in ink, coffee or tea (or even rubbing in and then rubbing off permanent marker) you can see the cracks better - test first - the Large crackle is 50 times larger / fewer than the fine crackles.
